ENGAGEMENT WITH WIDOWS ASSOCIATION OF KINTAMPO
Engaging with the Widows Association in Kintampo, Ghana, has been a transformative experience aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 2, and 10.
The encounter was not just a mere meeting but a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by widows and contributing to their empowerment. The meeting was participated by over 100 women on the 23rd December, 2023. It is just the first section of the four Widows Association of Kintampo.
In adherence to SDG Goal 1, the initiative aimed at alleviating poverty among widows in Kintampo. By providing financial support, the Widows Association received assistance to start their businesses. This direct intervention not only fulfilled an immediate need but also set the foundation for long-term economic stability. As these widows began to establish and grow their enterprises, they gained a pathway out of poverty, fostering sustainable development within their community.
The engagement also focused on SDG Goal 2 by promoting food security and sustainable agriculture.
Recognizing the interconnection between poverty and hunger, the support extended to the widows included resources for agricultural activities. This approach aimed to empower them not only as entrepreneurs but also as contributors to local food production. By enhancing their farming capabilities and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, the initiative fostered resilience against hunger and contributed to the broader goal of achieving food security in the region.
The Widows Association engagement aligned with SDG Goal 10, which emphasizes the reduction of inequalities within and among communities. Widows often face social and economic marginalization, and by providing them with financial resources and support to start businesses, the initiative aimed to diminish the economic disparities they experience. Furthermore, the project sought to promote social inclusion and break down the barriers that widows encounter, fostering a community where everyone, regardless of their marital status, has an equal opportunity to thrive.
